small correction: with recent versions of PEAR (and the extension), the following will work to install the filter extension (Unix/Linux/OSX only):

pecl install filter-beta

Nevermind... it seems that I am behind, and 5.1.1 was just released as a regression correction. So, yeah. I guess the target is now 5.1.2.

James, what was just released was 5.1.0, not 5.1.1. As far as I know, it's still in there. :-)

Well, looks like it won't be in 5.1.1 as it was just released without PECL Input Filter (according to the changelogs at least). Perhaps in 5.1.2.

Jacques, I'm actually looking into adding it into PEAR::PHP_Compat, which will provide the functionality to the entire 4.x and 5.0.x branches. That said, there's no reason one couldn't use the
pear
installer to install it in 4.x or 5.0.x:

Interesting. It could be more useful it backported to 4.4.X and 5.0.X, seeing that they are considering adding it to 5.1.1 which is supposed to be a maintenance release.

Matthew, take a look at my second code example. You're not restricted to superglobals only. You can use
filter_data()
to filter any script variables -- or you can just pass it a value and not a variable at all.

The extension definitely has merit. However, one thing I do not like about it is the fact that it will only filter data from a superglobal. What if I want to filter data I have acquired from other sources -- a database queue, a serialized file, a SOAP request? There should be a way to pass input_get() just a value.
